Photo GREEN LANE WIN WILF MANNION TROPHY

More than 400 local schoolchildren took part in the popular Wilf Mannion Cup, organised and sponsored by Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community.

The two-day competition – the sixth of its kind – incorporated 56 teams, with 448 children taking part form 30 primary schools across Teesside.

Matches were held at Boro’s Eston-based Community Centre and were refereed by MFCiC coaches and staff.

Green Lane Primary School won the trophy on penalties after they drew 1-1 with Rosewood in the final. It capped a successful season for Green Lane, who also won the Premier League Cup at Middlesbrough and finished eighth in the Nationwide competition.

The Wilf Mannion trophy was given extra support this year by the Middlesbrough FC shirt sponsor Garmin, who will be working in close partnership with the Boro Community Project throughout the coming season.

The triumphant Green Lane players each received a Garmin goody bag, including one of the company’s popular products, the Forerunner 50 watch. They also received their winners’ trophies supplied by A1Trophies.

The Forerunner 50 enables each winner to monitor their fitness whilst participating in sport. Functions include heart-rate monitoring with wireless transfer of training data to their computers.

The training aids will be of great value to their teams and school and help promote healthy lifestyle messages. The runners-up and losing semi-finalists also received goody bags including T-shirts and water bottles to use when taking part in their favourite sports.

Youth Engagement Worker Rachael Newton said: “The event was a great success and enjoyed by all involved. The teams were thrilled with their prizes, which were kindly given to them by Garmin. The event has made an excellent start to the summer and to Garmin’s future with MFCiC.”

Project Worker and Event Organiser Neil Trainor added: “The games were played in an excellent manor with fair play and enjoyment at the forefront. All of the teams should be very proud of the part they played over the two days’.

Photo Youth Leagues reaches end of season

The Box Clothing youth league has now reached the end of another exciting and eventful season.

The final round saw North Ormesby fail to fulfil a couple of fixtures due to TJFA commitments and their involvement in the North Riding Cup. We would like to congratulate them on their successes in both league and cup. This led to Stockton West End and Boro Bad boys battling it out for top spot in this round. West End eventually came out on top on goal difference, both teams remaining unbeaten throughout this round. This meant that in the overall table West End stretched their lead finishing on an impressive 13 points. North Ormesby were the closest challengers on 7 points with Boro Bad Boys next on 6 points. The captain of Stockton West End, goalkeeper Aaron Bryan, was presented with the trophy and £700 of Box Clothing vouchers to share between the team.  Many thanks go to Gareth Southgate and Di O'Connell for taking the time for this presentation prior to the vital Portsmouth home game.  Photographs from the presentation can be found in our photo gallery section.

A major factor in West End winning the league was the goals of midfield powerhouse Danny Rowbotham who finished well clear as top scorer on 28 for the season.  A fantastic total for a midfield player and he was presented with the top scorer trophy and £150 in Box vouchers. Well deserved. His closest challengers were both from North Ormesby with Mickey James and Anth Leyshon both showing impressive finishing to end the season on 21 goals each. However North Ormesby did have the Player of the League in Matty Carter. His consistent performances earned him 7 man of the match awards, Danny Rowbotham missing out on a clean sweep by one on 6 with Ryan Emmerson of Boro Bad Boys turning in some excellent games to earn 5 man of the matches. Again Matty was presented with his award and £150 of Box vouchers by Gareth Southgate prior to the game. I would like to thank all the players, coaches and managers who took part in this years league, the football has been of a very high standard and the league has been extremely competitive.

I would also like to give a massive thank you to Box Clothing for their support again this season. This is the second year they have supported us and it is again very much appreciated.  Support like this from local companies is vital to us so thanks again.

Finally, the league will now be taking a break until September when the new season will start.  The league will again be 7 a side and players will need to be under 17 on 1st August 2008.  Everyone is welcome and anyone interested in entering or looking for further information should contact Dave Maude on 01642 282128 or e-mail David.Maude@mfcp.co.uk

Photographs from the presentation are available for viewing in the Photo Gallery section under 'Football Community Centre'

Over 100 girls and parents turned out to see the girls presented with a season appraisal certificate and a memorable trophy for their efforts.
The U16 girls who sadly leave the centre this year were presented with their playing shirts, professionally framed and personally engraved.

Centre Director Craig Nicholson said "It was a fantastic way to say well done to the girls for their endeavour this year. For them to have done so well over what has been a very intense season is a great accolade and the girls should be very proud. It also gives myself and the coaching staff here a chance to say thank you to parents for their hard work and continued support".

The Centre of Excellence will commence again in August 08. If you are a talented female player and have been playing regular club football or know someone who has, contact Craig at craig.nicholson@mfcp.co.uk for information on the trial procedure taking place in June.

Photo JUNIOR PENALTY TOURNAMENT

Hopefully your 2007/08 season has been a successful as you had planned it to be and that your team and players are progressing in a positive direction.

After several discussions with junior managers it is apparent that there is a demand for something a little different for the kids/teams to get involved in.

With England’s recent poor shows when it has come to holding their nerve and winning a penalty shoot out, they have always struggled. England cant take penalties but can you!?!?!

We are offering places in a junior penalty competition. The competition will see teams grouped into groups of 4 teams where they will play each other once (3 games). Each match will consist of a best of 4 games, each game will consist of 5 penalties for each teams, the winning team will go 1-0 up, the another set of 5 penalties each will be taken, of which maybe the other team will win, so 1-1. A little like Tennis if you will.

This best of 4 games will be played against each team in the group, 3 points will be awarded for a win and if the match ends up in a 2-2 draw then a point each will be awarded. The winner of the group will progress to the finals a week later and the other teams will be eliminated. We have limited 16 spaces for each age group.

The following time will apply for the group stage week – 13 June 2008

Under 7 – 5pm to 6pm
Under 8 – 6pm to 7pm
Under 9 – 7pm to 8pm
Under 10 – 8pm to 9pm

The Finals will be held 1 week later 20th June 2008 between 6.00pm and 7.00pm

Hopefully the tournament should be a fast paced, action packed and exciting event for players and supporters as well as something a little different and value for money at £15 per team. Each team will include 1 Goalkeeper and 4 outfield players meaning that the goalkeeper also has to take a penalty.
