Soccability Tournament

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community was proud to host a Soccability Tournament last month, with students from across the Tees Valley taking part in the three day event.

The teams, which were from primary and secondary schools and post 16 provisions, were pitted against each other over the three days, with overall winners in each category.

The overall Primary School category winners were Ash Trees School from Billingham, and Holmwood School from Middlesbrough. Winner of both the Secondary School and Post 16 categories was Beverley School from Middlesbrough.

All teams thoroughly enjoyed the day and relished the opportunity to compete against other schools. Genna Hewison, project worker for MFCiC said “All three days were a great success, everybody enjoyed themselves and some excellent football was played”

Soccability is a fun training session held each week at MFCiC’s Eston Leisure Complex, which provides activities, games, and football participation and competitions for children and adults with a disability.

The aim of the Soccability session is to offer opportunities to play football regardless of ability. All coaches are F.A qualified through the F.A ‘Coaching Disabled Footballers Course’ and offer support and encouragement to the players.

Junior sessions are held on Saturday mornings from 9.30-11.00am, and Adult sessions are on Sundays from 2.00-4.00pm. All sessions cost £3, contact Genna Hewison on 0871 2821280 or genna.hewison@mfcp.co.uk for more information.

Harrowgate Primary Health Week

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community recently delivered a health week to 385 children who attend Harrow Gate Primary School in Stockton.

As part of the health week all children in the school took part. Nursery and reception children participated in practical activities whilst years 1 to year 6 all took part in a mixture of theory and practical lessons.

The theory lessons were based around how to live a healthy lifestyle, balanced diets and also food groups. The activities that the children took part created a fun and positive learning style trying to engage all children throughout the week.

The year 5 and year 6 children also took part in a smoking presentation where they were taught the risks and consequences of smoking. This had a positive impact, after which the children then took part in a competition. The competition was to design an anti smoking poster to bring to light the risks and consequences of smoking. After a very tough decision the winner was girl in Year 5 pictured above.
